Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok will make an unprecedented breakthrough
Recent leaks of Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok indicate that the player’s sex selection will not matter. In the past, Assassin’s Creed has described important parts of world history from many unique perspectives.
From Kassandra of Assassin’s’s Creed Odyssey to Assassin’s Ezio’s Ezio, we’ve seen a lot of different unique characters in the series from their perspective and their role in historical events.
One thing to be clear about is that choosing to play male or female characters in Assassin’s Creed is not something new. But it often means that the two characters will be completely different and interact with each other in scenarios A or B. Assuming the information leaked for Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok is true.
The next game will probably make sex selection completely unrelated to the plot. Although this can create challenges in effective storytelling. But this is why this can be a big change for the whole series.
Perhaps the biggest benefit to this change is that it will balance the experience for the entire player. With Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, the whole gameplay is based on the split between the protagonists Evie and Jacob. Basically a symbol for different play styles rather than their distinct personalities.
This issue has been improved with Alexios and Kassandra of Assassin’s’s Creed Odyssey. But even then there was a clear difference in performance and the change between the two actors. Not only that, Odyssey also integrates the remaining character into the story as an enemy. And the difference in character’s performance can change the impact of every scene.
AC Ragnarok is expected to introduce a main character named Jora. A character that players will be able to choose gender as well as customize appearance. If this is true, it will provide an opportunity for a real balance in storytelling style because it forces the writing and design of the game to be inherently adaptive.
